Do I need a SmarTrip card for the DC Metro?
Yes — a SmarTrip card (or contactless payment) is required on all DC Metro buses and trains. You can load one at any station kiosk. Single-trip paper tickets are no longer available on most lines.
How much does a Metro ride cost?
Metro fares are distance-based and time-of-day dependent, starting around $2.00 and rising to about $6.00 for the longest trips during peak hours. Off-peak fares are lower. An unlimited 7-day pass is available for frequent riders.
How often do DC Metro trains run?
During peak hours (Monday–Friday, 5–9:30am and 3–7pm), trains run every 4 to 12 minutes depending on the line. Off-peak and weekend service is every 12 to 20 minutes. Check WMATA's trip planner for current schedules.
